Quails
Rearing quail requires a nutritious diet and following housing recommendations from genetic suppliers.
Feeding recommendations
Hopper feeders should be used to feed young stock. They should have low sides, whilst feed is distributed to laying quails via the troughs in the cage equipment.
Using compound feed from a reputable manufacturer is a simple and reliable option if it is formulated according to the birds’ age and production stage. The compound feed must be in pellet form, with a pellet size of no more than 2–3 mm. Birds do not consume fine or powdery feed well, despite a daily requirement of 25–30 g per bird.
A starter diet with a high crude protein content should be provided during the first 3 weeks. The diet of birds aged 4 to 6 weeks should contain an optimal balance of energy, essential amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals. After 7 weeks, compound feed with a higher calcium content should be provided for productive laying quails.
